Envious of a Pile of Papers

Well, our dossier is on its merry way to China as we speak!!! We just got word from Holt that our dossier was included in this afternoon’s shipment from Eugene, Oregon to Beijing, China. It is expected to arrive on Monday – man we wish we could say the same thing about ourselves!

It took a little longer than expected for our documents to make their way through the U.S. Department of State and the Consulates/Embassy. We were definitely on the longer end of the quoted turn time from each of these entities. What finally came back to us though was a thing of beauty. It was our finalized, certified, authenticated originals with their golden sticker bling one-upped by fancy “China Authentication” seals. We don’t actually know what the seals say as they are written in Mandarin, but we’ll take the shiny emblem to mean our documents were properly prepared and maintained in a manner acceptable to China.

Holt takes care of the final review and shipment of the dossier, so we popped it in the mail to them the very day after receiving the last of the documents from our couriers. Once the dossier reaches China, it will take a couple of days to be formally “logged in” by the CCWA, at which point we are officially eligible to receive a child match from any future special needs shared list!!! The list is released at roughly the same time each month. September’s list is rumored to be released next week, so we will unfortunately not make the cutoff for eligibility this time around. It’s OK though; our time will come when our time comes.

As two typically “in control” people, this journey has actually been an invaluable lesson in letting go. At so many points (most actually!) throughout the process, the progression of things has been completely out of our hands. We have both grown immensely in many ways and now actually find great peace in the patience. There’s something very freeing about releasing ourselves of the burdens of worry and command. The real test will be when we see her sweet face and have to wait 3-6 months before we can hold her in our arms. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. For now, we’re relieved the dossier is out of our hands and that things are moving right along just as they should – in their own sweet time.
